Meet Kevin Monroe - Change Agent #0049 of our #SCN1000ChangeAgents Series.

For most of his life, his default response when anything extraordinary came knocking at the door was, "Who am I?" and he automatically disqualified himself from the remarkable life he longed to live. Then, through a series of serendipitous events, he had an epiphany and realized he could change the question he asked as a default response. By improving the questions asked, he could create a better and brighter future and the ordinary that had defined his life could become extraordinary. Instead of responding with"Who am I?" when an opportunity came knocking, he began responding with "Why NOT ME?" That simple shift has resulted in a seismic impact.

The WHY NOT ME? Kevin Monroe consults and coaches CEOs and leaders of purpose-powered, people-focused, and values-based who are on the journey to creating HumansFirst workplaces and cultures where people flourish, and profits soar.

He creates unique environments where people gather for extraordinary encounters and experiences. In these environments, Kevin facilitates catalytic conversations that engage leaders, their peers, or their teams in finding fresh solutions to lingering problems and creative insights to high-stake stalemates that have drained them of energy, resources, and results. While Kevin has held plenty of illustrious titles in his career, his current favorites are husband, father, Papa, friend, and host. Kevin invites you to contact him at kevin@kevindmonroe.com, listen to the Higher Purpose Podcast (HigherPurposePodcast.com or on your favorite podcast player), engage on Twitter @kevin_monroe or LinkedIn (Kevin Monroe).

Meet Ellen and Michael Erickson - Change Agent #0047 of our #SCN1000ChangeAgents Series.

We’re Mike and Ellen Erickson – we hail from Washington, D.C. and we seek to make an impact in the world, but first we aim to improve own world view before helping those around us.

For the past 9 years, we worked hard on building a career in international development and social impact, most notably at Deloitte and PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), where we worked with foreign aid organizations like the World Bank, United Nations (UN), United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Peace Corps, Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), and State Department.

However, after getting married in June 2018, we decided that we wanted to take some time off to explore the world around us. So, after saving enough money and making plans for our next chapter, we bid adieu to our jobs, friends, and family and bought one-way tickets to Southeast Asia. Through our travels, we seek to build a better understanding and cultural awareness of the world around us in order to enrich our perspectives that we bring to our work and everyday life. At the end of our year of travel, we plan to land development jobs in the field so that we can be closer to the individuals we serve and continue to make a social impact, but in a more meaningful and direct way.

In the meantime, we founded and launched our own travel blog called Brown Flip Flops (www.brownflipflops.com) to capture our travel experiences and share our insights on development issues and trends as we travel around South Asia and Africa. Check us out on Brown Flip Flops (www.brownflipflops.com) to follow our journey and see what our future in international development holds!

Meet Jessica Lincoln - Change Agent #0044 of our #SCN1000ChangeAgents Series.

In 2012, Jessica opened her own location of SpiderSmart Learning Centers in Ashburn, Virginia. Since that time, the operation has grown to include dozens of educators who have served hundreds of families. In 2014, Jessica opened a second location of SpiderSmart Learning Centers in Kensington, Maryland. She oversees financial and marketing operations in addition to daily management of the staff and facilitation of the lessons. Jessica also does contract work for the SpiderSmart brand, which includes developing reading, writing, and math curricula and maintaining social media channels for more than 10 SpiderSmart locations. The best part about working with the clients at SpiderSmart is that Jessica gets to build long-term relationships with the families and watch their children grow and learn over the course of several school years.

Jessica became involved with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention in 2018, when she registered herself for training on how to become a bereavement support group facilitator for children and teens. The motivation to attend this training came after Jessica lost her younger brother, Kevin, to suicide in 2016. The dearth of support for bereaved siblings in her area was shocking. After completing the training, Jessica started a group called SB4T (Suicide Bereavement for Teens) and holds weekly meetings for teens ages 14-18. Jessica has also participated in AFSP events such the Out of the Darkness Community Walks, International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day, and State Capitol Day. She hopes her role with AFSP can continue to grow in 2019.
