  • December 24, 2018 7:10 AM | Victor Cora Nazario (Administrator)

I am married to the most intelligent, intuitive, sweetest, most compassionate woman in the world. She also happens to be my business partner. We both wear many hats. One of the hats we both share is business development so we often find ourselves in networking events. Networking events happen early before the business day starts or later at night. Both of our working days start at 6 AM so by the time we show up at a 6 PM networking event we have already worked around 12 hours.

We recently attended a networking event at member's club. We met a lot of great people. We both networked together and separately for a couple of hours. As often happens we found a fellow entrepreneur and friend that was also networking. We decided to end the night by having a quick bite and a drink with her. People were still networking when we decided to leave. I left the table first because I was going to get something (I forget what it was). A man called for my wife's attention and I kept walking to let her either introduce herself or say hi to her current contact - I didn't know if she knew him but then again we were at a networking event. I kept walking toward the elevator to wait for her. My wife and our friend caught up with me pretty quickly so I was surprised. Before I could say anything my wife started telling me what happened.

The man (let's call him Donald) called my wife from a table with about 5 other men. He asked her how long she has been a member. She extended her hand to greet him. He clasped her hand with both hands. He then started caressing the top of my wife's hand with his thumb. She immediately took her hand away and said bye to cut the conversation short. She left and didn't even look back.

Many things bother me about what happened.

    • Donald felt completely OK with doing what he did as his first interaction with an adult female at a business event.
    • Donald's friends saw what he was doing and they didn't say anything. They might've even been proud of their friend.
    • My wife felt that she didn't want to make a scene so she took her hand and just left. When I asked what she said to Donald she said she didn't want to embarrass him so she just left. She also played the situation down probably to prevent me from making a big deal out of the situation.
    • My initial reaction was to laugh with her and our friend just saying that she was cute and men are attracted to her. I also told her not to worry that I wouldn't make a scene either. I am afraid that I also thought like her and didn't want to "overreact".

I woke up the next day mad and embarrassed at myself for reacting so nonchalantly. I was also disappointed at this society for making my wife feel like she has to protect this miscreant's feelings when he was in the wrong. She had just worked a 12 hour day, was still working when she was at this event, and this jerk saw nothing but a pretty girl. He didn't see a business owner trying to make connections. I guess in his mind this woman must be looking for a man.

You might think I am being sensitive but when you put yourself in somebody else's shoes, you start seeing things differently. Let me give you an example. Imagine that the same thing happened to Donald. But on the other side of this exchange was a man. So the man grabs Donald's hand and caresses it the same way. What do you think Donald's reaction would be? Would he be justified in having whatever reaction you just imagined?

My wife should've been entitled to react the same way. Women deal with this nonsense all the time. But we expect them to be gracious and to not make a big deal out of advances like these. When any of them complain or react in the way that a man would react to the same situation, we label them as difficult or not friendly or other words I will not use here. An ABC News/Washington Post poll (1,260 adults polled) found that about half of women experience some type of harassment.

Please remember that if she is at a networking event she is still working. Let her do her job. She is there for her business, family or just to advance her career if she is working for somebody else.
