Meet Alex Hughes - Change Agent #0097 of our #SCN1000ChangeAgents Series.
Alex Hughes is the President of Hypernova Solar, George Mason University’s Solar-Vehicle Racing Team. He started this team as a freshman with the goal to compete in the American Solar Challenge and World Solar Challenge. Now he is a rising junior, and their team of over 30 students works tirelessly to get their first car ready for competition. One of the unique aspects of our team is that, instead of designing vehicles to try and win the competition, they are attempting to design vehicles that are more realistic and market-applicable. They hope that their work will eventually further solar-electric vehicles enough to the point that they will be produced just like any other car. Their student organization is a 501c3 non-profit, which on top of designing and building solar-electric vehicles, also teaches their members the engineering and leadership skills they need to be successful after college.
On top of this, Alex also run the Mason Entrepreneurship Club, as well as mentor for a FIRST Robotics team in the northern Virginia area. Currently, he is majoring in Bioengineering with minors in Mechanical Engineering and Entrepreneurship, and he hopes to be able to start his own company once he graduates.
